Harriet the Spy, c’est moi

The Facebookosphere is apost with lists of people’s ten most influential books, which is interesting to read. What does it say about me that most of mine would be children’s books? Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in the Willows are foundational to my being. Five or six Madeleine L’Engle books taught me a bunch of stuff, including how to care about the world. British books about girls and their horses are a part of me. British books about kids and magic. Yeah, yeah, I’ve read a lot of adult books, sure. But influential? I am full of Aunt Annie’s Alligator. My blood beats with the heart of a titian-haired girl who drives a roadster. Harriet the Spy, c’est moi.
